A two year investigation involving numerous law enforcement agencies in and around Chatham County has netted 10 arrests of local residents. In 2012, the General Assembly enacted a law requiring people who possess and intend to transport more than 25 pounds of copper material to get a transportation permit from the local Sheriff and produce the permit at the business making the transaction. Investigators received information that Hayes Iron and Metal of Siler City was receiving copper without requiring the permit and many people in and around Chatham County were cashing in on this illegal activity.
