By Randall Rigsbee

Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is kicking off a big weekend of fundraising and community support for Special Olympics North Carolina as Sheriff Steve Maynor rappelled down a building in downtown Raleigh today to help raise money for the organization.

Sheriff Maynor participated in the Over the Edge event at 1 City Plaza in Raleigh, rappelling down the building to support Special Olympics North Carolina and help celebrate the beginning of Special Olympics Chatham County, a newly established local chapter that will provide additional opportunities for Chatham County athletes to train and compete.

Chatham County Sheriff Steve Maynor rappels down 1 City Plaza in downtown Raleigh on Sept. 25 to raise money for Special Olympics North Carolina and help celebrate the establishment of Special Olympics Chatham County.

Sheriff Maynor’s rappel was sponsored by Intrepid Build, which contributed $1,000 in support of Special Olympics.

The rappel serves as the kickoff to a weekend of Special Olympics fundraising and community events hosted or supported by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. Tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 26, the CCSO will host its second annual Cruisin’ for Champions motorcycle ride benefiting Special Olympics North Carolina.

Maynor was joined by Special Olympics representatives

The ride will begin at White Oak Beach at Jordan Lake, with registration at 9 a.m. and kickstands up at 10 a.m. Riders will take part in an escorted scenic ride through Chatham County before returning to White Oak Beach for food, music, games, raffle prizes and more.

The event is open to all riders, and members of the public are encouraged to attend and support Special Olympics athletes.

Last year’s inaugural Cruisin’ for Champions ride drew 121 motorcyclists and raised more than $11,000 for Special Olympics North Carolina. This year’s event will continue that effort while bringing additional attention to the newly established Special Olympics Chatham County chapter.

Registration is $30 per rider and $10 per passenger and includes breakfast, lunch, an event T-shirt and a custom challenge coin. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics North Carolina, which provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The CCSO encourages residents to come out on Saturday to support the riders and the athletes of Special Olympics.
