Pittsboro, NC – Pittsboro celebrated the grand opening of its new skateboard park on September 20, a project that has brought together local skateboarders, community leaders, and residents in a collaborative effort to create a space for youth and skateboarding enthusiasts. After years of planning, fundraising, and advocacy, the park stands as a testament to community spirit, determination, and the transformative power of skateboarding.
A Vision Takes Shape
The journey to Pittsboro’s skateboard park began over a decade ago, fueled by a desire to provide local youth with a safe environment to skate. On grand opening day I had the opportunity to talk to some key figures in the project as they shared their experiences and motivations behind the park’s creation. Frank Geller, Tony Sabbagh, Toby Turnbull, and Brian Ernman, all passionate skateboarders, played pivotal roles in the park’s development.
The initial idea emerged in 2011 when local skateboarders realized that while they had access to private skate bowls in their backyards, the younger generation lacked similar opportunities. The group recognized the need for a public facility that would allow kids and teens to engage with skateboarding in a safe and supportive environment. They began brainstorming ways to make this vision a reality.
Fundraising and Community Support
The first major step toward establishing the park was fundraising. The group organized a rock concert at the local Pittsboro Roadhouse restaurant, which featured three live bands and a silent auction. With the help of local businesses and community members who donated items for the auction, they raised approximately $4,000. This initial success galvanized the group, demonstrating that there was significant community support for the project.
Tony Sabbagh, who took on the role of organizing the effort, emphasized the importance of collective action in making the park a reality. “Without everyone else helping, it doesn’t happen,” he noted, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defined the project.
Overcoming Obstacles
Despite their enthusiasm, the group faced significant challenges in securing land for the park. Initially, the city was resistant to the idea, claiming there was no available land for such a project. However, the group was able to work out a land transfer between the county and the school board, ultimately designating a suitable area for the park. The park’s location was strategically chosen to be accessible to the community, ensuring that it would serve as a gathering place for skaters of all ages.
Designing the Park
With funding and land secured, the next step was designing the park. The group opted to work with Artisan Skateparks, a company known for its expertise in creating skateboarding facilities. The design process was collaborative, allowing the skateboarders to provide input based on their experiences and preferences.
The resulting layout reflects a freestyle design, accommodating the rectangular area of land while incorporating various features that cater to different skill levels. The park includes ramps, bowls, and obstacles that challenge both novice and experienced skaters alike.
The Grand Opening
The grand opening of the skateboard park was a highly anticipated event, drawing a crowd of local residents eager to see the finished product. Skateboarders of various ages took to the ramps, showcasing their skills and celebrating the long-awaited completion of the project.

The park not only provides a venue for skateboarding but also fosters community connections. It serves as a hub for social interaction, where skaters of all ages can share tips, cheer each other on, and build friendships.
The Impact on the Community
The skateboard park is more than just a recreational facility; it represents a significant investment in the future of Pittsboro’s youth. By providing a safe and inclusive space for skateboarding, the park encourages physical activity, creativity, and social engagement.
“The park brings all people together,” Sabbagh explained. “skateboarding is brings all people together. There’s no competition to beat someone down. Everyone’s like stoked for everyone.”
Looking Ahead
As the park is expected to grow in popularity, the community is already considering future improvements. Suggestions for adding lights for evening skating sessions and planting trees for shade have been put forward.
The skateboard park has also inspired plans for additional community events, such as skateboarding competitions and workshops for beginners. These initiatives aim to further engage local youth and promote the sport of skateboarding.
