Pittsboro, NC – Do you want to support your local farmers and see them play a bigger role in Chatham’s food system? Are you concerned that not all parts of Chatham County have equal access to healthy foods? Does living in a vibrant community rooted in local foods appeal to you?

Food market peppers and tomatoesThe Chatham Community Food Council has been in formation during the last year. Current members include  those from farming, Cooperative Extension, Chatham County government, small business, and nonprofits. We have open seats we would like to fill with a diverse representation of stakeholders from across the county and food system.

In the last five years, at least 24 counties in North Carolina have formed food councils, which are partnership organizations aimed at bringing together key people involved in local food economies to improve community and regional food systems.

Local food systems include an array of important components, such as community gardens, farmers’ markets, produce stands, restaurants, grocery stores, farm-school partnerships, transportation, and affordability of foods.

Food councils help promote stronger local food systems, including improving access to healthy local foods. They assess the current food situation, make recommendations on how to improve it and communicate recommendations to policymakers and organizations that can take action.

The three major functions of the Chatham Community Food Council include: developing a policy agenda based on practical research for policy changes; advocating for specific food systems issues; and sharing information, including events, services, and programs.

Members of the Chatham Community Food Council must be prepared to attend monthly meetings during a two-year term, but the members will decide when and where the meetings occur.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve on the Chatham Community Food Council, complete an application form no later than July 31, 2015. The form can be found at   http://tinyurl.com/FoodCouncil2015. If you prefer a printed version of the application or have questions please contact .

You will hear back on the status of your application by August 14, 2015.
