Pittsboro, NC – Steve Maynor was officially sworn in as Sheriff of Chatham County during a ceremony Thursday evening at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.
Maynor, a veteran law enforcement officer with more than 20 years of service to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, took the oath of office before a large crowd of family members, colleagues, elected officials and community supporters.
The ceremony featured the presentation of colors by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard under the direction of retired Chief Deputy Charles Gardner. State Rep. Robert Reives administered the oath of office, and Maynor’s wife, Adrian, pinned on his sheriff’s badge as daughters Riley, Remi and Rhetta looked on. Former CCSO Capt. Roy Allen, associate vice president for Workforce Development and Continuing Education at Central Carolina Community College, served as master of ceremonies.
Following Sheriff Maynor’s swearing-in, sworn deputies, detention officers and civilian employees of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office also took their oaths of office, reaffirming their commitment to serving the people of Chatham County.
Maynor was appointed sheriff by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on July 27 following the retirement of Sheriff Mike Roberson.
Maynor has served in a variety of leadership roles during his career with the Sheriff’s Office, including captain of Special Operations, where he oversaw court services, narcotics, community services and Student Resource Officers. In March 2023, Roberson appointed him chief deputy, a position in which he helped oversee the agency’s daily operations.
Addressing those gathered, Maynor said the evening represented far more than his own appointment.
“It’s an incredible honor, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside each and every one of you as we continue to serve Chatham County,” Maynor said. “Tonight is certainly special for me and my family. But it is not about one person. It’s not about me. It’s about the team of men and women serving this county and taking your oaths tonight, our relationships with our families, with each other, with our law enforcement partners, and the citizens who place their trust in us every day. Together we will continue building on the strong foundation that’s already been laid, moving this sheriff’s office forward together.”
Maynor also recognized the sacrifices made by the families of law enforcement officers.
“The truth is, none of us serves alone,” he said, thanking his family and acknowledging the support they have provided throughout his career.
Looking ahead, Maynor said the Sheriff’s Office will continue to focus on professionalism, fairness and building trust within the community.
“We will enforce the law fairly. We’ll protect the constitutional rights of every person. We will use our training, our judgment, our compassion and our professionalism every single day,” he said.
Maynor encouraged members of the Sheriff’s Office to remain focused on the positive impact they can have through everyday interactions with the public.
“We don’t change a community overnight,” he said. “We change it with one conversation, one act of kindness, one encounter at a time. We don’t build trust in one day. We teach, we encourage, we learn and we grow. And we keep showing up, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
He concluded by encouraging every member of the agency to “love what you do” and to “wear this badge and this uniform with pride.”
