Pittsboro, NC – The search for a teenage swimmer who went missing Saturday evening at Jordan Lake was suspended Sunday afternoon after severe weather moved through the area.
[UPDATE] – Search operations continued Sunday until severe weather, including thunderstorms and heavy rain, moved into the area, making it unsafe to continue coordinated search efforts. As personnel were wrapping up operations for the day, a North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission officer located the missing swimmer.
Out of respect for the family and because the victim is a juvenile, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is not identifying the victim at this time.
On Saturday, July 4 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a teen encountered trouble in the water while swimming from a family boat. An extensive search began shortly afterward and continued into late Saturday night.
Search operations continued today until severe weather, including thunderstorms and heavy rain, moved into the area, forcing crews to suspend operations. Search efforts were called off for the day at approximately 4 p.m.
“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “We remain committed to this search and are grateful for the dedicated efforts of all the agencies and personnel assisting us.”
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the agencies and personnel who have assisted with this effort, including North Chatham Fire Department, Alamance County Rescue, FirstHealth EMS, Chatham County Emergency Management, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and North Carolina State Parks.
