1 Apr 1771 Happy 252nd Birthday Chatham County! The Colonial Assembly established Chatham County through legislation introduced on December 5, 1770, which was effective on April 1, 1771. The county was formed from a portion of what was then Orange County. Chatham County was named for the Earl of Chatham, William Pitt, who was a "defender of American rights in the British Parliament." Why split up Orange County to form a new county? According to the act passed by the Colonial Government, the aim of the act was to remedy the difficulty and expense for residents in the southern part of Orange County to travel to the Orange County government seat (Hillsborough) to conduct business. (Remember how few roads there were, not to mention the lack of bridges.) On the other hand, it was well known that folks in the backcountry had complaints about how their needs were being ignored by government, and a great deal of political unrest was centered on Orange County. When Orange County was divided to create Chatham (along with Guilford, Wake and Surry about the same time), the aim was to reduce the size of political gatherings in Hillsborough and dilute the impact of the Regulators in the region. The map is extracted from Collet's 1770 "Compleat map of North Carolina" and shows the area that would become Chatham.
