Chatham County provides update on water billing process

Pittsboro, NC – Due to the cyber incident that Chatham County experienced on October 28, 2020, the processing of County water bills was interrupted affecting the November 2020 through February 2021 billing cycles. Chatham County Water Utility continues to recover and is preparing to send its first bills since the incident.

Chatham County water bills will be processed once all administrative work is complete. These efforts include reading meters for the first time in months, updating account status information in water billing systems and processing all incoming payments during the time of the incident. Completing these processes will ensure customers receive an accurate bill.

Water bills are scheduled to be sent out at the end of February or beginning of March. These bills will be due March 25, 2021. To reduce the impact of receiving a larger than normal bill, customers will be charged at the lowest tiered rate. There will also be no late charges. If customers have difficulty paying their bills, they can call 919-542-8270, after they receive the March bill to discuss payment plan options.

Chatham County would also like to remind residents that they now have convenient options to pay their water bills. The county is now accepting water connection applications and water payments at their new location, 192 West Street, Pittsboro (formerly SunTrust Bank). This new location offers the public access to a night deposit box and drive-thru payment service. Drive-thru hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Vehicles should access the drive-thru from Rectory Street. Residents may also pay their bills through the online payment portal at

To protect the health and safety of staff and residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person payments and water utility applications will be made by appointment only. Residents may call 919-542-8270 for Water Utility billing inquiries.
