Construction on Pittsboro traffic circle to begin January 11

Pittsboro, NC – The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), via their contractor Carolina Sunrock, will be beginning construction on the downtown Pittsboro traffic circle (Project ID: STIP R-5724A) on Monday, January 11, 2021 with a scheduled completion date of October 30, 2021 for all hardscape and asphalt work. Landscaping to be included with the project has a scheduled completion date of April 28, 2022. Please note “Weather Permitting” on all specified dates listed herein.

The project is expected to be completed in three phases, with Phase 3 separated into two steps:

• Phase 1– Removal of the concrete islands within the traffic circle
• Phase 2 – Construction on the Eastern portions of the traffic
• Phase 3 (Step 1) – Construction on the Northwest portions of the traffic circle (will include nighttime work)
• Phase 3 (Step 2) – Construction on the Southwest portions of the traffic circle (will include nighttime work)

Effective immediately, residents and commuters can expect to see signs and other detour infrastructure being installed for the project. Off-site detours for all truck and thru traffic re-routing will take effect Monday, January 11, 2021. Additionally, beginning Monday, January 11, 2021, lane closures will be installed with a flagmen operation to assist and facilitate the removal the existing curb islands within the existing traffic circle footprint. Phase 1 work is expected to be complete the week of January 11, 2021. All lanes will remain open, except for temporary measures narrowing, redirecting or stopping traffic.

Phase 2 work may begin towards the end of the week of January 11, 2021 and no later than January 18, 2021. Phase 2 of construction will close the Eastern side of the traffic circle. During Phase 2, US 15-501 will remain open in a two-way, two lane traffic pattern on the west side of the traffic circle. US 64 on the East side of the traffic circle will be closed. US 64 on the west side will remain open to the traffic circle.
