Pittsboro, NC – Carolina Brewery, the Triangle area’s oldest brewery, took home its fourth national medal at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival in September, as its Copperline Amber Ale won silver in the Ordinary and Special Bitter category. Along with its medal win, Carolina Brewery recently welcomed Brewer Becky Hammond to Brewmaster Nate Williams’ team, where she will oversee quality control as Carolina Brewery renews its commitment to, and increases investment in, canning and Carolinas-wide distribution.
In late September, Copperline Amber Ale, one of Carolina Brewery’s most established brews, took home the silver medal in the Ordinary and Special Bitter category at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival in Denver. It marked the fourth medal win for Carolina Brewery at the prestigious annual event, following a gold medal for its Flagship IPA in 2006, and bronze medals for its Sky Blue Golden Ale in 2012 and its Genuine Oatmeal Porter in 2013.
BREWING DREAM TEAM
Nate Williams is in his 11th year as Carolina Brewery’s brewmaster and has worked out of its Pittsboro location and brewhouse since its opening in 2007. He was trained at Siebel Institute of Technology’s prestigious Master Brewer Program [KH1] in Chicago and oversees all aspects of Carolina Brewery’s production, canning and distribution.
Becky Hammond joins Carolina Brewery from Nashville, TN, where she most recently oversaw operations as brewmaster at Mill Creek Brewing Co. Hammond’s primary focus will be on quality control and consistency as Carolina Brewery continues its growth and increases its focus on canning and distribution. Prior to joining Mill Creek, Hammond worked for Craftworks, the parent company of Rock Bottom Brewery and Gordon Biersch, and served as brewmaster at both the Nashville and Richmond Rock Bottom locations.
FOCUS ON CANNING AND DISTRIBUTION
Carolina Brewery has placed a focus on canning and distribution in 2018, and has made substantial investments in equipment and research, including purchasing its own canning line, a dissolved oxygen meter and a 60,000-pound grain silo, along with dedicating space for an on-site laboratory for quality-control assurance. Last year, Carolina Brewery partnered with Wilmington, NC-based Ebbing Branding + Design to relaunch its logos and packaging, and today its beers can be found at grocery stores and bottle shops throughout North Carolina and South Carolina, including in most Harris Teeter locations.
OPEN HOUSE / OYSTER ROAST
Carolina Brewery will celebrate its 2018 Great American Beer Festival medal win and officially welcome Hammond during an open house / oyster roast event at its Pittsboro location on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. The event will feature brewery tours by Williams, Hammond and Founder and Owner Robert Poitras, live bluegrass music and Carolina Brewery’s newly-acquired canning line will be in action, canning of beers for distribution.
