DIY homemade insect repellent

by Sharon Graham

Pittsboro, NC – I walk a mile or more every day, but in the summer those insect bites leave me itching like crazy. I cannot use Deet. It makes me sick. I’ve tried the cedar repellants and still got bites. But the recipe below works for me and is worth the price of the cloves which you can buy in bulk at a natural foods store. Perhaps make a smaller batch the first time. Try it out.

*     1/2 litre of alcohol  (this is approximately  17 oz)
*     100 gram of whole cloves or approximately 3.5oz
*     100 ml of baby oil or similar (almond, sesame, chamomile, lavender, fennel etc) 3.4 oz

Leave cloves to marinate in alcohol four days. Stir every morning and evening and after 4 days add the oil. It is now ready to use.

How to use:

Gently rub a few drops into the skin of the arms and legs. (Personally, I rub it lightly on all exposed skin.)
