Much has been said and written about the election law reform legislation known as VIVA (Voter Identification Verification Act – HB 589) – but too many of the reports are misleading or just plain wrong. The legislation was passed in the 2013 legislative session and signed by Gov. Pat McCrory in August. Mostly, the old guard media have focused on just three provisions of the new law — the voter ID requirement, the elimination of same day registration and the shortened early voting window. These three parts of the law are the most controversial, so focusing on them gives liberal advocacy groups a platform on which to continue their assault on the people who support election reform

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt was cited for speeding in Chatham County on New Year’s Day. Folt, 62, was cited for going 76 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone at around 4 p.m. on Hwy. 64 outside the town of Pittsboro near the Haw River.

Winners announced for fall state-wide high school business plan competition
Six North Carolina high school students won highest honors in the state-wide Hop on the BUS! Business Plan competition. The students attend Jordan-Matthews, Eastern Alamance and Walter Williams Academy of Finance High Schools. 43 teams and well over 150 students participated in the competition. The winning students will be formally recognized for their accomplishments at the North Carolina Council for Economic Education’s award ceremony in May.
