ACC Football Power Rankings: Miami separates from the league as Wake Forest surges into No. 2
The ACC has developed a clear No. 1 and a fascinating argument over virtually everything behind it.
Miami delivered the weekend`s defining performance, dismantling Clemson 41-13 in Death Valley to improve to 5-0 and 3-0 in ACC play. Wake Forest followed its upset at Louisville with an even louder statement, crushing Stanford 57-3. Pittsburgh remained unbeaten by surviving Virginia Tech, 35-33, although the season-ending injury to quarterback Mason Heintschel changes the Panthers` outlook considerably.
NC State also deserves one of the week`s biggest promotions. The Wolfpack followed the emotional Vanderbilt loss with consecutive victories, beating App State and then Louisville, with CJ Bailey throwing for a career-high 373 yards against the Cardinals.
These rankings continue the Chatham Journal methodology: full résumé matters, but recent performance receives extra weight, opponent strength matters, and movement must be justified by new evidence.
The official ACC standings underline the developing separation: Miami is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the league, Pitt is 5-0 and 2-0, Duke is 4-0, while Wake Forest and SMU are both 4-1.
1. Miami - the gap is getting wider
There isn`t a serious argument for anyone else at No. 1.
Miami`s 41-13 victory at Clemson was more valuable than another routine blowout because of the venue and opponent. Clemson had won three straight and was 2-0 in the conference. Miami scored on its opening possession and controlled the game from there.
Darian Mensah completed 18 of 27 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score. Miami had not won at Clemson since 2010.
This wasn`t merely Miami surviving its toughest conference road environment. It was Miami looking distinctly better than one of the ACC`s traditional measuring sticks.
The Hurricanes are No. 1 by a substantial margin.
2. Wake Forest - the hottest challenger
No team has improved its standing more dramatically over the past two weeks.
First came a 30-27 victory at then-No. 16 Louisville. Then Wake returned home and beat Stanford 57-3, the largest margin of victory in an ACC
