ACC baseball news and notes – Week of May 14, 2018

Greensboro, NC – Both division titles hang in the balance as ACC teams enter the final week of the regular season … No. 7 Clemson (19-8 in ACC play) holds a one-game lead over No. 4 NC State (18-9) in the Atlantic Division following the Wolfpack’s three-game sweep of Wake Forest this past weekend … No. 8 North Carolina (19-8) saw its Coastal Division lead over No. 9 Duke (17-9) trimmed to 1.5 games after the Blue Devils took two of three from the visiting Tar Heels … This weekend’s series featuring the teams in contention for division titles include Clemson at Pitt, NC State at Florida State, Virginia Tech at North Carolina, and Duke at Georgia Tech.

The division winners will claim the top two seeds for the 12-team ACC Baseball Championship, scheduled for May 22-27 at Durham Bulls Atlantic Park … Clemson, North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech have clinched nine of the tournament berths, but the final three spots are still to be decided.

Clemson became the first ACC team to hit the 40 win mark with a 7-2 win over Kennesaw State on Tuesday night, the first time the Tigers have reached that mark in the regular season since 2006 … Four other teams are closing in on 40 wins, with NC State at 39-12, Louisville at 37-16, Florida State at 37-16, and Duke 38-12.

A check of the NCAA Baseball RPI finds five teams still among the top 16 and several making upward moves … UNC still holds the No. 5 spot, followed by No. 10 Florida State, No. 11 Clemson, No. 15 Duke and No. 16 NC State … Louisville is up to No. 27.

NC State’s Will Wilson was named NCBWA National Hitter of the Week after leading the Wolfpack to a perfect 5-0 record last week. Wilson hit .550 with 12 RBI and a .542 on-base percentage over the five games.

Josh Stowers went 4-for-5 with his fifth home run of the season, one double, three stolen bases and a career-best four runs scored as Louisville wrapped up its road series sweep at Pitt with an 8-5 win on Sunday … Stowers’ four hits matched a career high as the Cardinals posted their fourth series sweep of the season and won for the 11th time in their last 13 games.

A 5-2 win over UNC on Saturday clinched Duke’s first series victory in the rivalry since 2014 and gave the Blue Devils their school-record 17th ACC win of the season … The Tar Heels’ 8-6 win in Sunday’s finale put their “magic number” for clinching the Coastal Division title at two.

NC State’s sweep of Wake Forest ran the Wolfpack’s current winning streak to eight consecutive games … The weekend sweep was NC State’s fourth of the season and its second in ACC play … The Wolfpack wrapped up the three-game set with a 10-6 win on Sunday, marking its 12th time this season scoring in double digits … NC State is 29-3 this season when scoring at least six runs.

Miami currently joins NC State as one of the ACC’s hottest teams with eight consecutive wins … The recent tear has vaulted the Hurricanes into third place in the Coastal Division … Miami’s series sweep of Virginia Tech featured a pair of extra-inning wins … A day after tying their season mark for hits with 19 in a 16-4 victory over the Hokies on Saturday, the Hurricanes collected 14 more in Sunday’s series finale, in which they scored four runs in the top of the 10th for a 12-8 win.
