Pittsboro, NC – Chatham County will be kicking off their 2018 collection events for household hazardous waste (HHW) beginning March 17. Only residential waste will be accepted. No business waste allowed.

When: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm on the third Saturday of the month, March through November.

Where: Main Facility at 28 County Services Road, 6 miles west of Pittsboro, off Hwy 64

Medicine Take Back

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct a medicine take back as a way for residents to safely dispose of unwanted medications. No needles, sharps, or liquids will be accepted. The Sheriff’s Office will be at the HHW Events on April 21, July 21, and November 17.

What to Bring

Decals are not required, but you must be a Chatham County resident and show your NC Driver License with current address.

Latex Paint

Latex paint can be safely dried out and put in with your regular trash instead of bringing it to the Household Hazardous Waste collection. When dried and solid, latex paint can be taken to any of the 12 Collection Centers (decal required) or put in with your curbside trash. To dry it out, take off the lid and let it sit outside in a covered area. Add kitty litter or sawdust to speed up the drying process.

Approximately 60% of the material brought to the HHW collection is liquid latex paint. It is the most costly item we collect. To save our budget for handling the more hazardous wastes, we encourage residents to dry it up for disposal.

How to Pack Your Hazardous Items

Do not mix wastes. If possible, leave materials in their original containers with labels intact. Put them in the trunk of your car in a cardboard box lined with newspaper or a reusable container. To help with traffic flow and safety, residents should stay in their vehicle. Staff will unload items.

If your cardboard containers are clean, we can recycle them for you. Any plastics tubs or crates left at our facility will be landfilled. Residents are encouraged to reuse these containers if possible.

• General household trash (never accepted at Main Facility)
• Yard debris, inert debris, tires, scrap metal (scales are closed)

How to Reduce Your Hazardous Waste

• Buy only the amount you need, even if a larger container offers a price discount.
• Use up any hazardous products completely, following directions on the label.
• Store leftover paint at room temperature until the next project. Properly stored paint can remain usable for 10 – 15 years.
• Try less toxic products or use homemade recipes.
• Find someone who can use your leftovers.
