Raleigh, NC – The Shaddox Creek Bridge on Corinth Road in Chatham County will be replaced, thanks to a $1.6 million contract awarded by N.C. Department of Transportation.
The contractor, Smith-Rowe, LLC of Mount Airy, will replace the 65-year old bridge, which is functionally obsolete, which means it was built by design standards no longer used in bridge building.
Construction for the new bridge can begin as early as August 1, and the new bridge should be open by mid-October 2017. Additional vegetation work is scheduled to be done in August 2018.
The new bridge will be built adjacent to the current one, which will remain open during construction so there is no need for a detour route.
Bridge replacement projects like this one are currently underway across the state as part of Governor McCrory’s 25-Year Transportation Vision to enhance travel safety and to better connect North Carolinians to jobs, education, healthcare and recreation opportunities.
This was one of 17 road and bridge projects recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. They came in at about $149.2 million, which was $1.3 million less than DOT engineers’ estimates. The contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders, as required by state law.
