Pittsboro, NC – Tucked amongst the pines and winding back-roads of Chatham County sits Haw River Christian Academy, a private classical Christian school (and member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools) that currently serves junior kindergartners through tenth graders. The quiet, picturesque surroundings belie the exciting environment that exists behind the unassuming front doors. While still a small school of approximately 65 students, Haw River Christian Academy has grown steadily since its inception in 2007. The school has added one grade level each scholastic year, with its first graduating class set to don cap and gown in 2018.
Academic grade levels are not the only additions the school has seen since moving to their spacious new home at Emmaus Baptist Church in 2013. Students enjoy an abundance of opportunities to enrich their artistic sides through the school’s much-loved art and music programs. For the 2015-2016 school year, HRCA will be offering students the option to participate in a Suzuki Strings Program (the only program of its kind in Chatham County), Drama Club and Club Sports Teams, as well as continuing such tried-and-true favorites as Chess club and Lego League.
The summer months aren’t without fun either, as HRCA looks forward to its second year of summer camp programming. The popularity of last year’s camp sessions led to the addition of even more offerings to this year’s three week line-up which kicks off July 20th. Camp programs are open to any family looking for an educational, safe and active learning experience for their school-aged children and are taught by Haw River Christian Academy teachers, parents and community members who are enthusiastic about sharing their skills and special interests with eager campers.
“I am especially excited about our camps this year,” said Heather Baker, 6th Grade teacher at Haw River Christian Academy and summer camp instructor. “HRCA is such a wonderful, uniquely supportive environment and it’s so great to watch this camaraderie spill over into all the camp courses, too. We joke that this kindness is the only “Common Core” you’ll find at the school. We have sport camps, sewing, science and veterinary camps, a Latin camp, a “Mock Trial” camp and so many more. There really is something for everyone!”
This year will also be the second annual Haw River Triathlon, a family-friendly event that will be held on August 29 at Camp Royall. This multi-sport event aims to educate children in proper exercise and training skills that will ideally become life-long habits. Children aged 4-18 can participate within their own age groups, or parents and children may team up together for the biking, swimming and off-road running course. The event is an enjoyable, supportive and friendly environment for participants to try their hands (and feet!) at triathlon competition.
“The triathlon is probably the school event most dear to my heart,” said Rebecca Ridge, HRCA parent, co-President of the school’s Parent-Teacher Fellowship and triathlon coordinator. “We get to promote physical health and fitness while enjoying fun fellowship with school families and members of the surrounding community. It’s also an important fund-raising opportunity for the school- definitely a “win-win-win.” for everyone involved!.”
With a constantly expanding schedule of summer activities and an impressive school-year academic program, Haw River Christian Academy is quickly turning from a “little school that could” to a “little school that IS.” For more information about HRCA or to view and register for their July and August camps, please visit www.hawriverchristian.
