Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office will host its 2nd annual Community Appreciation Night on Friday, September 15, 2017, from 5-8pm. The event will be held on the Sheriff’s Office lawn at 295 West Street, Pittsboro, and will give residents the opportunity to get to know the Sheriff’s Office family in a fun, family-friendly environment. The 1st Annual event attracted an estimated 1,500 visitors; deputies expect this number to continue to grow.

“This event is about celebrating our community,” says Sheriff Mike Roberson. “The people we serve aren’t just ordinary residents, they’re family—and we want visitors to feel welcome at our office.”

Sheriff Roberson dreamed for years of organizing a Community Appreciation Night for residents after seeing them routinely send food, flowers, and cards thanking deputies and showing their support for law enforcement. He also noted how local churches invited deputies to worship services and prayer vigils, children delivered handmade artwork, and community members regularly stopped by to share their thanks.

Sheriff Roberson says these acts of kindness have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated by members of his office. One of his first acts as Sheriff was to set his vision of a Community Appreciation Night into motion.

“You’ve shown your support and gratitude. Now it’s our turn,” says Sheriff Roberson. “We owe everything to our citizens, and this special event is our way of saying thanks to community members for their support.”

Everyone is invited to join the Sheriff’s Office for a fun-filled night of games, food, and fellowship. All meals, activities, prizes, and services are free while supplies last. For more information, or if you would like to get involved or help sponsor the event, visit the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page at facebook.com/CCSONC for more details or call Lt. Phillip Richard at 919-545-8143.

Pittsboro, NC – The body of a teen who was reported missing near Sugar Lake in Pittsboro since last Wednesday has been found. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office reported that Gabriel “Boone” Cummins was found dead in Sugar Lake early Tuesday morning shortly after 1 a.m. Authorities said the unofficial cause of death appears to be drowning.

Authorities had suspended their search of the lake around 2 p.m.on Friday afternoon because of plummeting water temperatures and zero visibility at 40 feet below the water’s surface. The lake floor is littered with old machinery and other hazardous debris that pose safety concerns for divers.

Sugar Lake in Chatham County, NCAuthorities resumed their search on Monday after the Sherills Ford Fire Department in Catawba County offered to use its remote operated vehicle. These remote controlled devices are capable of performing searches that are too dangerous for human rescuers. A search and rescue team used the robotic vehicle to recover the body of a missing 18-year-old from the Chatham County lake.

Pittsboro, NC – Authorities have been searching for a teen who went missing near Sugar Lake in Pittsboro Wednesday evening. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management, North Chatham Fire and Rescue, and First Health all responded to the area of 300 Sugar Lake Road around 5 p.m. Wednesday in an effort to locate 18-year-old Gabriel Boone Cummins.

A friend had dropped the missing teen off on Sugar Lake Road between 1 and 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Dive teams from surrounding agencies had been searching Sugar Lake since Wednesday night. They searched in areas of water 40-feet deep. Sugar Lake, a former rock quarry, can reach depths of 100 feet or more. Nothing was found.

“Right now, he’s categorized as a missing person, until we find more information,” said Mjr. Charles Gardner with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. “We’ve had previous drownings here in this area and it’s now an area that a person can be charged for trespassing if they’re in this area because it’s unsafe.”

Authorities suspended the water search Friday at 2 p.m. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said they were halting the search for Boone Cummins because of concerns about diver safety. The lake floor is littered with old machinery and hazardous debris that would make further dive attempts highly dangerous for rescue personnel.

Deputies had K-9s searching the perimeter as well, but didn’t find any trace of Boone.

Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Gabriel Boone Cummins is asked to contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at 919-542-2911.

Pittsboro, NC – On July 6, two credit card skimming devices have been removed from a gas station near Jordan Lake. With the recent rash of credit card skimmers found in Chatham County, it may be a good idea for all residents to take some extra precautions when fueling up at their favorite gas station.

Skimmers are illegal card readers attached to payment terminals — like gas pumps — that grab data off a credit or debit card’s magnetic stripe without your knowledge. Criminals sell the stolen data or use it to buy things online. You won’t know your information has been stolen until you get your statement or an overdraft notice.

Skimmers are nothing new, but technology has made them smaller and harder to find. Sometimes, they’re even hidden inside a gas pump.

Here are tips to help you avoid a skimmer when you gas up:

    • Make sure the gas pump panel is closed and doesn’t show signs of tampering. Many stations now put security seals over the cabinet panel. This is part of a voluntary program by the industry to thwart gas pump tampering. If the pump panel is opened, the label will read “void,” which means the machine has been tampered with.
    • Take a good look at the card reader itself. Does it look different than other readers at the station? For example, the card reader on the left has a skimmer attached; the reader on the right doesn’t.
You can try to wiggle the card reader before you put in your card. If it moves, report it to the attendant. Then use a different pump.
    • If you use a debit card at the pump, run it as a credit card instead of entering a PIN. That way, the PIN is safe and the money isn’t deducted immediately from your account. If that’s not an option, cover your hand when entering your PIN. Scammers sometimes use tiny pinhole cameras, situated above the keypad area, to record PIN entries.
    • Monitor your credit card and bank accounts regularly to spot unauthorized charges.
    • If you’re really concerned about skimmers, you can pay inside rather than at the pump. Another option is to use a gas pump near the front of the store. Thieves may target gas pumps that are harder for the attendant to see.

Photo credit: Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Kamloops, CanadaIf your credit card has been compromised, report it to your bank or card issuer. Federal law limits your liability if your credit, ATM, or debit card is lost or stolen, but your liability may depend on how quickly you report the loss or theft. For more information, read Lost or Stolen Credit, ATM, and Debit Cards.Consider placing a fraud alert or a credit freeze on your credit report. This requires businesses to confirm your identity before approving applications in your name.

If you think you see a scam, talk with someone. Your story could help someone avoid that scam. Then report it to FTC.
