Governors Club to host 56th NC Men’s Amateur Championship

Chapel Hill, NC – The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) has selected award-winning country club Governors Club (GC) in Chapel Hill to host the 56th North Carolina Amateur Championship on its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course June 16-19.

amateur golf tournament147 players will play the course at 7,000 yards, with green speeds projected to be around 11.5 on the Stimpmeter on Thursday, June 16. The remaining 60 competitors, and players tied, will play on Saturday, June 18, with a champion named Sunday, June 19.

Championship Schedule
Thursday, June 16             Round 1 – 18 holes of stroke play.
Friday, June 17                  Round 2 – 18 holes of stroke play. Cut to low 60 scores and ties. Field re-paired according to score.
Saturday, June 18              Round 3 – 18 holes of stroke play.
Sunday, June 19                Round 4 – 18 holes of stroke play. Awards ceremony immediately following play.

“We are excited to be hosting our fifth CGA championship,” said Governors Club Director of Golf, Thomas Brinson. “As the second largest golf association in the country, the CGA serves as a steward of golf in the Carolinas.”

The Jack Nicklaus Signature course has hosted U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open qualifiers in recent years. The nine holes of the Lakes are the flattest of the three nines. As the course name implies, strategically placed ponds and lakes add to the natural beauty of the course, and serve up challenges. The Foothills nine holes transition from the relatively level Lakes course onto undulating hills and slopes on the side of Edwards Mountain. The Foothills is the longest of the three courses.

“Governors Club’s challenging and beautiful course is perfect for our championship,” said CGA Executive Director Jack Nance. “We’re excited to see new faces on the course along with some of our returning champions: Steven Brame, Matthew Crenshaw and Mark McMillen, Jr.”

Competitors had to qualify through one of six 18-hole qualifiers, with a small number of exempt players who were automatically selected to play in the championship.

Governors Club members will be cheering on fellow member Rex Willoughby who begins on Hole #10 at 1:10 p.m. in Round 1.

nc amateur golfThree of the top five finishers from last year will return to vie for the championship. An eagle on the penultimate hole at the Country Club of Landfall gave Carter Jenkins a one-shot victory over Justin Tereshko of Greensboro. Jenkins has turned professional, currently playing on the Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada.

Past champions in the field include: Steven Brame of Henderson (2013); Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington (2012)and Mark McMillen, Jr. of Smithfield (2009).
