Chatham County has opened two shelters for residents in need

Pittsboro, NC – Due to forecasts of freezing rain throughout the night, Chatham County has opened two shelters at 4:30 pm today as a precaution for residents who may need it. Freezing rain combined with gusty winds often trigger power outages. The two shelter locations are:

  • Northwood High School, 310 Northwood High School Road, Pittsboro
  • Virginia Cross Elementary School, 234 Cross School Road, Siler City

People coming to the shelters should bring their medications and other necessary personal items. Remember to bring what you will need for up to three days.

There is limited kennel space for cats or dogs at the shelters. Please call 919-542-2911 to make sure that there is space for your pet before bringing it to the shelter. Owners bringing pets must supply food, bedding, medications and other supplies for the pet.

Dogs must be contained in a kennel or on a leash at all times while at the shelter and cats must remain in an enclosed carrier the entire time at the shelter. Management of all pets brought to the shelter remains the responsibility of the owner. Pets not fully immunized for kennel related illnesses should be sheltered at home if possible.
